SPRINGFIELD — City officials on Friday named the four companies chosen for the first round of negotiations on host community agreements to open recreational marijuana stores.
The companies are:
- INSA, proposing a shop at 1200 West Columbus Ave. The company operates an Easthampton location selling marijuana to medical and recreational customers, and a medical marijuana dispensary in Springfield. The West Columbus Avenue address is currently the site of Luxe Burger Bar.
- Holistic Industries, proposing a shop at 1300 Boston Road.
- 6 Bricks LLC, proposing a shop 250 Albany St.
- 311 Page Boulevard LLC, proposing a shop at 311 Page Boulevard.
Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno made the final choice from 27 companies that met a May application deadline. Sarno said he based his decision on recommendations from a committee appointed in February to review the applications. Committee members included a number of city department heads and City Councilor Tracye Whitfield.
Sarno said the committee considered “… criteria regarding traffic congestion, public safety, financial wherewithal, non-adverse effects to our neighborhoods/business district areas, proper land use issues, geographical issues and our sensitivity to diversity aspects.”
Host community agreements will be sent to the City Council for approval, and then on to the state Cannabis Control Commission.
A city zoning ordinance approved by the City Council in September 2018 allows up to 15 marijuana retail stores in Springfield. The businesses are restricted to 58 streets within business and industrial zones.
The city had planned to select the first four companies by June 17. In late May, the city extended the period to July 9.
