FLINT, MI — An informational meeting will be held in Flint and two other Michigan cities to discuss licensing fee discounts available to city residents interested in opening a recreational marijuana business.
Flint is one of 19 Michigan communities with above-average rates of marijuana arrests and high rates of poverty, selected by the Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency to qualify for the discount.
A meeting in Flint has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at Mott Community College, 1401 E Court St, to “promote and encourage participation in the licensed marijuana market,” a Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency news release states.
Two other 10 a.m. meetings are scheduled for Monday, one in Pontiac at Ruth Peterson Senior Center, 990 Joslyn Ave, and another in Inkster at Inkster City Hall, 26215 Trowbridge St.
While attendance is free, space is limited. Interested participants must register online.
Residents of 19 high-poverty cities get discount to open Michigan marijuana businesses
The plan intends to increase the number of local business owners in the marijuana industry.
The discount, announced by the agency Thursday, July 18, is part of a social equity program for the recreational marijuana industry.
Under the law voters approved in November 2018 that legalized marijuana, state officials had to create a plan to help communities that have been disproportionately affected by marijuana prohibition.
Genesee County’s Mt. Morris Township is also included in the list of communities selected. Other cities include: Detroit, Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Saginaw and East Lansing.
Applicants whose businesses would be located in the 19 communities will have their fees reduced, based on the following criteria:
- Applicants who have lived in the community for at least the past five years will get a reduction in fees of 25 percent.
- Applicants who have a majority stake in a company, who have lived in the community for at least the past five years and have a marijuana related-conviction will get an additional reduction in fees of 25 percent.
- Applicants who have a majority stake in a company, who have lived in the community for at least the past five years and have been a registered primary caregiver for at least two years from 2008-2017 will get an additional reduction in fees of 10 percent.
