Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, Illinois residents 21 years old and older will be allowed to possess and use recreational marijuana, with some restrictions. Before the new state law takes effect, some local communities have been choosing to prohibit recreational marijuana businesses from opening, while others are creating regulations on how to manage them.
