The possibility of legalizing weed this year in New Jersey was dashed Monday after state Senate President Steve Sweeney announced the Senate would not pursue adult-use legislation. Instead, you’ll get to decide whether the state should change its constitution with a ballot question in 2020.

With more than 60% of state residents in favor of legalization, it would seem recreational cannabis is inevitable — some insiders predict consumers could light up by early 2021. But how will it be regulated, and with only six medical marijuana dispensaries open today, will there be enough supply?

Meanwhile, Gov. Phil Murphy announced today he will now focus on expunging records for marijuana charges.

Federally, legalization took a big step this week after the House Judiciary Committee approved legislation that would end the federal ban on cannabis, allowing states to decide whether to legalize for adult use, giving banks the ability to offer credit cards. It would also make it easier to study any medicinal benefits of the plant.

We wrote about the winners and losers to this week’s big announcements, but the news keeps on rolling, so to speak.

NJ.com’s marijuana team, who also contribute to the online trade journal NJ Cannabis Insider, will be answering your questions on Friday at 11 a.m. to discuss everything you want to know about hemp, cannabis and legalization efforts in the Garden State.

The Q&A session will be one-hour long with pre-moderated questions. If you have questions, you may post them now and we’ll begin publishing them with answers tomorrow morning from 11 to noon.
