Bay County dispensary Nature’s Medicines begins recreational marijuana sales

BAY COUNTY, MI — A Bangor Township dispensary is the second in Bay County to begin serving recreational marijuana products.

Nature’s Medicines, located at 3480 E North Union Road east of I-75, began selling recreational marijuana Thursday morning. First-time customers get 10% off their purchase, said Renee Kolka, the store’s manager.

“We’re looking forward to continue serving our med patients, as well as meeting and greeting our new adult-use patients,” Kolka said.

Bay City residents Matt and Kelly Pope were among the first recreational customers at Nature’s Medicines, leaving with two varieties of marijuana “flower.”

“I just recently started smoking once it became legal,” Matt Pope said. “I’ve got bipolar (disorder) and real bad depression, and it works better than the medicine I’ve been prescribed.”

The store mostly stocks flower and serves many different varieties. While the store sells other products like edibles, it aims to set itself apart through its large selection of flower, which Kolka said is very popular with medical customers. Sativa varieties have a more energetic effect, and indica varieties are better for those dealing with anxiety or similar issues, Kolka said.

“We have more inventory coming in, it’s just a matter of time,” Kolka said. “Of course, there’s a backlog when you order.”

Nature’s Medicines was preceded by Roots Provisioning, which began sales Friday, Dec. 27. A third Bay County dispensary, Puff Cannabis Company, has received a license, according to LARA.

Since voters approved the legalization of recreational marijuana use and possession for adults in 2018, dispensaries across the state are starting to receive licenses to sell recreational products. The first sales in the state started Dec. 1 in Ann Arbor.
