Local officials attend ‘Business of Cannabis’ event at Penn State Lehigh Valley

State Representative Mike Schlossberg and Senator Judy Schwank attended a “Business of Cannabis” event along with industry leaders at Penn State Lehigh Valley Wednesday.

“We don’t often see some of these things, we don’t have these huge operations, on the East Coast but they do out in Colorado and Oregon and Washington so it was very very helpful for me to see that,” Sen. Shwank said.

In 2019 there were more than $500 million in medical marijuana sales in Pennsylvania, and industrial hemp production is exploding.

“The amount of permits are starting to expand as demand goes up,” Rep. Schlossberg said.

Nationally, sales are predicted to reach $30 billion by 2025, a number that could go up as more states legalize. There’s a bill before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to do just that, but it’s unlikely to pass.

“If somebody wants to get high in the privacy of their own home, and doing so finances teachers in the Allentown School District, I’m all in,” Rep. Schlossberg said.

“I think it something certainly that should be discussed in the Commonwealth,” Sen. Shwank said.
