PHOENIX – With Arizona voters having legalized the recreational use of marijuana, a Phoenix community college wants to train the next wave of cannabis professionals.
GateWay Community College, part of the Maricopa Community College system, has launched the Center for Cannabis Business Training.
The center’s website calls it “online education for a growing business.”
“The Center for Cannabis Business Training will ensure that the cannabis and CBD industry minimizes its risks and helps produce knowledgeable employees for businesses,” Jeanne Ratliff, GateWay manager of workforce development, said in a press release Thursday.
“Formalized industry training helps business owners, employees and customers have a positive and safe experience.”
The program debuts with three noncredit courses offered online: Budtender Training, CBD Hemp Education Product Training and Cannabis 101.
The classes, which aren’t part of GateWay’s established programs of study, range from six to nine hours and cost from $85 to $99.
The school said it plans to add courses and offer customized training for specific businesses.
“Being flexible enables us to help fill a need in the market,” said Maureen Hannon, program supervisor. “Allowing for future and customized offerings, we can ensure we meet the industry’s needs no matter where it is at.”
Last month, voters approved Proposition 207 by a 60%-40% margin, clearing the way for anyone 21 or older in Arizona to possess up to 1 ounce of weed.
Existing dispensaries of medical marijuana, which has been legal in the state since 1996, will be the first to sell pot for recreational use.
