Portage would start taking applications for marijuana businesses for 2021 starting March 1.

Applications would be open for provisioning centers, secure transporters, safety compliance facilities, grower facilities, processor facilities, microbusinesses and retailers during the process.

Applicants need to be prequalified from the Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency and retailers need an existing medical marijuana business permit with Portage before applying.

Portage said the applications would need to be submitted in person and include a signed and completed application form, required attachments and a $5,000 permit fee. Portage City Hall would only be open by appointment because of COVID-19.

Appointments could be made starting March 1 by calling the Portage Office of the City Clerk 269-329-4511 and no appointments could be made before March 1.

Application forms and permit guidelines are available at the Portage city website.

The deadline for submission has not been determined and would be announced at the city website.
