The city of DeLand has been working to recruit new business to the area and say they’ve hit it out of the park with a medical marijuana company locating their Florida headquarters there.
The business, called Cookies, has moved into a 400,000 square foot manufacturing site once owned by the Brunswick Corporation. It’s one of the largest vacant business sites in the city and officials are anxious to see it in use again.
Staff at Cookies, a company known for producing top-of-the-line cannabis products and founded in part by musician Berner, are renovating behind closed doors though they shared several pictures of the ongoing site work.
“What they’re going to be doing is distributing, manufacturing, growing, they’re going to be doing their entire operations out at the property,” Chris Graham, DeLand spokesperson, said.
DeLand is the company’s foothold in Florida after acquiring one of the state’s 22 medical marijuana treatment center licenses last year. City officials say the company’s operation will be a $100 million economic boost bringing in at least 400 new jobs when the build-out is complete.
“As far as capital investment, it is one of the largest here in the city so that’s huge for our tax base,” Graham said.
A broad base of community leaders led by DeLand’s economic development manager, has been working to recruit Cookies for almost a year and recently sealed the deal, one they hope is just the first large-scale manufacturing operation to settle in.
“Hopefully this is the match that lights the fire for economic development,” Graham said.
In addition to taking over this property, city officials say the company will also utilize 20 undeveloped acres here for new construction, all as part of phase one.
