Cannabis operations are getting closer to starting up in Chico. Now, one of those businesses could work alongside the famous Sierra Nevada Brewery…literally.
But don’t expect to see the iconic brewery logo on any cannabis products any time soon. A representative for Sierra Nevada says a new 80,000 square foot “innovation center” has been proposed to the city on the plot of land directly next to the brewery on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Pkwy and E 20th Street that, amongst other businesses, would house one cannabis manufacturing operation by a third-party.

The property has been in the process of being leveled for weeks as the brewery prepares to move its event center there. The representative describes the center as a warehouse focusing on the production of multiple craft beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic alike. A small portion of this building would be leased out to an undisclosed company to package cannabis beverages.
In a statement, Sierra Nevada Brewery writes:
The construction adjacent to the front of our brewery is a relocated event space to make way for a new innovation center. The innovation center is an exciting future project, and we can’t wait to share more details soon. A section of that facility will be licensed to a third party that intends to package cannabis beverages. Sierra Nevada brewing co. Will not be associated with that business; we were listed on the permit due to a clerical error that is being corrected.
Beyond this, the representative says they are in the “early phases” of this project and are expecting to release more information about it in the coming weeks.

Chico awarded its first-ever cannabis business permits to five manufacturing and distributing businesses in March. Those businesses will not be accessible to consumers interested in purchasing cannabis products. 10 final businesses interested in opening Chico’s first-ever storefront cannabis dispensaries are currently being interviewed before officials narrow those down to three.
Those finalists will be given the permits and opportunity to open three storefront dispensaries that prior city council discussion indicated could be available to consumers by the end of this year.
