Medical marijuana dispensaries are expanding in Iowa

MedPharm is rebranding its dispensary. It is investing more than $10 million into its existing cannabis production facility, the company will now be known as Bud & Mary’s.

Previously, the crop was able to meet the state’s medical marijuana needs for five to six months. With current demands, it is only enough for six to eight weeks.

Lucas Nelson, Bud & Mary’s group president, said that recent laws removing the THC cap on medical cannabis are driving up needs. Easier accessibility for med cards also contributes to that increased demand.

“Knowing that you can now get online, you can get a card and sometimes as quick as a day, maybe two days max, you can come in and get some relief that you might not otherwise be able to get,” Lucas Nelson said.

The $10 million investment in production is meant to help meet the increasing need of more than 10,000 registered patients.

“When we’re done with the expansion we’ll have more than three times this amount of plants in any given harvest,” Nelson said.

Most of the patients are individuals who struggle with chronic pain. Medical marijuana is commonly known to be an effective pain reliever when prescribed by a professional.

Although the expansion is increasing cannabis production in Iowa, some state lawmakers believe more should be done. Sen. Joe Bolkom said that Iowa’s current medical cannabis program is too restrictive.

“It’s too expensive for patients and there are only five locations in Iowa where patients can access their medicine,” Bolkcom said. “There are thousands of Iowans that could get benefit from medical cannabis that are not in the program now.”

Nelson said that he is ready for this growth in Iowa.

“It’s going to make sure that those are always on the shelf,” Nelson said. “No matter what, we’re going to give ourselves more than enough space to make sure we can grow as many plants as the state needs.”
