Ivan Moody is a firm believer that “boredom will kill you,” and he’s lived a life that’s filled with anything but. As the lead singer of internationally acclaimed hard rock band, Five Finger Death Punch, he’s toured the world, battled substance abuse addiction, and is now pursuing his passion for the power of cannabis with his new company, Greenings by Moody’s Medicinals.
From choir singer to hard rock icon
Moody’s life has been steered by his passions and a quest for the real, with music a persistent, driving force. He started singing in the choir at age 7 and joined bands as a teen. He was always drawn to passionate, organic, soulful music that moved him, everything from Bela Fleck to ZZ Top.
“Unfortunately, or fortunately, I’ve always been able to tell the real from fake, and I gravitated toward the real,” he says. Having never met his real father, Moody says he was always searching for heroes to look up to and emulate.
“Most of my heroes were artists and musicians, and some were fictional characters like Sherlock Holmes,” Moody says. “But for the most part, it was people like my grandmother, my Uncle Tom and regular everyday people that made their marks without ever needing the credit or having to be thanked for it. Humble equals hero.”
In 2001, he moved to Los Angeles, where he joined Motograter and toured with hard rock legends including Korn, Marilyn Manson, and others. Then in 2003, he took the mic as lead singer of Five Finger Death Punch, and they’ve been making hard rock history ever since, achieving 25 top-hit music singles and a load of other accolades. To name a few: They recently broke the world record for most consecutive Mainstream Rock Airplay number-one hits (14 total), and they hold the record for the most number-one albums in the history of Billboard’s hard rock chart.
Addiction, recovery, and cannabis
While the band’s success soared and they played around the globe, Moody was facing his own personal struggles with alcohol use disorder and addiction. In 2017, he decided to get help and focus on his health and recovery. Unfortunately, the medications prescribed to help him stay sober not only didn’t work but also caused a host of problems for him.
So, he turned to the healing powers of cannabis, which he had long witnessed.
“Growing up in Denver, I was exposed at an early age to things such as cannabis, CBD and other holistic forms of medicine,” Moody says. “It’s always been in my life and became even more of an important part of my life when its healing properties helped me swap out three out of the five prescriptions, I was prescribed for night terrors, anxiety, depression, and lack of appetite. In addition, it has been a partner of mine on my road to recovery and will continue to be for the remainder of my days.”
Wanting to help others experience the same natural healing powers of cannabis, he went into business. First in 2019, he launched Moody’s Medicinals, a CBD company. Then last year, he introduced Greenings by Moody’s Medicinals, an edgy new cannabis line, featuring a variety of premium flowers, infused pre-rolls and gummies.
“As a businessman, I choose to invest in entities that I believe in firsthand, and cannabis couldn’t be more of a ‘natural’ fit for me,” Moody says.
The future for Greenings is bright. Currently, available in Las Vegas, Greenings is planning to expand soon, with hopes to expand nationwide. And Five Finger Death Punch shows no signs of slowing down either. In fact, their new album “Afterlife,” which came out in August 2022, already boasts two number-one hit singles.
The famed rock star has also dipped his toes into acting, poetry and an array of other creative endeavors that keep things interesting. What’s next is anyone’s guess.
“When I have ‘off time’…well…let’s just say there is no such thing,” Moody says.
