If you are a cannabis enthusiast or medical marijuana patient that loves to cruise then you probably wondered if it is legal to bring pot with you on a trip.
With more and more states in the US, but also some countries around the globe going embracing green, the matter can be complicated. You can start a trip from a state in the US that has legalized personal marijuana use and visit a state that does not. What if you don’t step foot in the state where marijuana is illegal? What about federal law?
For major cruise lines, however, the rules are straightforward.

Here’s where four top cruise lines stand on cannabis and CBD, as reported by Travel Pulse.

Carnival Corp’s (NYSE: CCL) Carnival Cruise Line: “While certain CBD products used for medicinal purposes may be legal in the US, they are not legal in all the ports we visit and therefore are also considered prohibited items. Guests will need to consult with their physician for other suitable alternatives.”
Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE: NCLH) placed cannabis on its list of prohibited items: “All illegal narcotics/drugs, including marijuana prescribed for medical purposes and other items used as drug paraphernalia. This includes all products containing CBD, oils, candies, and gummies or any product containing THC.”
Disney’s (NYSE: DIS) Disney Cruise: “In accordance with United States federal regulations and local laws in the destinations we visit, illegal narcotics—including synthetic designer drugs—and marijuana (even if legal where you reside or medically prescribed)—are prohibited on board the ships and on Disney Castaway Cay.”
Royal Caribbean (NYSE: RCL): “In no event shall any Passenger bring on board the Vessel any illegal controlled substances (including medical marijuana),” reported Miami Herald about its policy. “Marijuana possession and/or use, including medical marijuana, and possession or use of any illegal drugs, is strictly prohibited in many jurisdictions visited and on the Vessel at all times, as well as in terminals, during shore excursions or any other part of the cruise, regardless of any local, state, or other laws which might permit use or possession of marijuana.”
While some may wonder how it is that an 18-year-old can gamble on a cruise ship but medical marijuana patients cannot bring their medicine with them.
