Woodland Cannabis Dispensary holds open house in downtown Woodland

The Woodland Cannabis Dispensary held its second open house Friday at 163 Court St. in an attempt to engage with interested or concerned community members.

“We are a group of local longtime holistic health practitioners who are focused on providing high-quality products and compassionate service to our members,” the dispensary’s press release stated. “Our team focuses on best practices in all aspects of the business. Product and premises safety, member education, compassionate care and environmentally conscientious practices are the top priority.”

The dispensary held its last open house in April 2022 when it was applying for a conditional use permit to operate the storefront cannabis dispensary.

Laura Mendez, CEO of the dispensary, explained that they recently completed the third phase of the application process.

“They will be picking from everyone that they interviewed and I’m not sure where that will go,” she explained. “So we’re looking at probably three to four weeks before we find out and then it will move on to phase four.”

As a company, Mendez said the collective wants to stay a part of the community through open house events or other methods of engaging with the community.

“It’s important for us to continue to introduce ourselves, especially to those who don’t know much about us,” she stressed.

Mendez argued that it’s important for a smaller, community-based dispensary to be a part of Woodland instead of larger ones with stronger financial backing.

“We are a local, small business and it’s important for us to be a part of Woodland especially because a lot of us are from Woodland,” she highlighted. “We want to make sure we are representing cannabis the way that we represent it, which is medical-based and educational. Those things are super important to us.”

She noted that there are many people who have to leave Woodland to purchase cannabis products and would benefit from having one in a more accessible location in downtown Woodland.

“When we did our walkthrough, so many people are having to leave to go to other cities to make purchases, which can be extremely difficult, especially for seniors,” she highlighted. “So we’re hoping that becoming local, it would make it so easy and accessible, especially for those who don’t have a way to travel.”

Adam Rodriguez, 20, works at Carlton Senior Living in Davis and noted that he’s seen how cannabis products can significantly improve the lives of seniors.

“I work at a retirement home and I see a bunch of people there every day using topicals, edibles or vape cartridges,” he explained during the open house. “There’s a lot of different ways to consume it and it helps them in a lot of ways.”

Rodriguez lives in Woodland and also uses cannabis products to deal with anxiety and to increase his low appetite.

“It’s not in a bad location,” he said regarding the dispensary. “I feel like it’s a place that anybody can go.”

Currently, Rodriguez relies on delivery services to get cannabis products delivered to his house from Davis. However, he prefers being able to walk in and check products himself or ask employees for recommendations.

“Now that it’s here, I can just walk here,” he emphasized.
