Ann Arbor to extend cannabis shop hours

Ann Arbor, home to the annual Hash Bash event, is taking things to the next level. The city, home to the most dispensaries in the state of Michigan, recently announced that cannabis shops can stay open later than ever before.

Now, when the clock strikes midnight, Ann Arbor pot shops have to close, when it was previously 9 p.m.

According to the City of Ann Arbor, the City Council voted 10-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 5, to extend cannabis sales an extra three hours.

The legislation said there was increased interest in extended hours, and they worked closely with the Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD) to make a decision.

“Finally, there has been interest among marijuana business owners to allow extended hours of operation. After discussion with AAPD, we recommend amending the ordinance to allow operating hours as late as 12:00 a.m., from the current 9:00 p.m. limit. Changes have been reviewed by Planning and Zoning and they have approved the proposed amendments.”

The ordinance changes also adopted revisions to streamline the marijuana business permit application process.

“To simplify the marijuana facility permit application process as well as the administrative procedures, this ordinance amendment clarifies terms, extends the reapplication timeline, and clarifies the circumstances in which a reapplication is required. Instructions for businesses in receivership were added to provide for clear communication with the City in these cases.”

Chris Page, Strategic Communications Manager for the AAPD, said the department doesn’t anticipate any additional problems due to the change in hours.

“We’ve had very few issues with marijuana dispensaries across the city and don’t anticipate the ordinance will present any new public safety concerns,” he wrote in an email to the Detroit Free Press.
