The Tshwane metro is planning to refurbish four buildings in central Pretoria for public use.
The Blesbok, Bosbok, Ou Stalshoogte and Nuwe Stalshoogte buildings in Arcadia will be transferred to Housing Company Tshwane (HCT), a social housing entity of the city.
The metro said the move will unlock funding from the Social Housing Regulatory Agency (SHRA) for their refurbishment.
“All four buildings are high-rise rental stock owned by the city. The buildings are currently in a bad state and require extensive repairs and maintenance to restore them to their former glory,” MMC for human settlements, Ofentse Madzebatela said.
Madzebatela recently visited the buildings for an inspection and interacted with residents. He encouraged them to pay their rent on time to enable the city to maintain the buildings.

The MMC said the metro is under dire financial strain and urged residents to pay their dues to assist service delivery.
“With the city currently facing financial distress, we call on all tenants to pay what is due to the city in the form of rent and other services,” he said.
“I will conduct further visits to our remaining high-rise rental buildings to ascertain their state and effect the necessary interventions to keep them habitable.
Providing affordable rental housing opportunities remains a key priority for the multiparty government.”
Ward 92 councillor Leanne de Jager, who accompanied the MMC on the inspection, said they inspected the municipal apartment buildings for outstanding maintenance, and to assess the residents’ future needs
