
Pretoria Central Police Station is once again among the top 30 stations in the country plagued by serious crime.
This was revealed when police minister Bheki Cele and supporting officials published the third quarter crime stats for the 2023/24 financial year on February 16.
The statistics indicate the number of crimes reported to the country’s 1 163 police stations from October to December 2023.
Pretoria Central, Akasia and Brooklyn police stations were among Tshwane’s top 30 stations plagued by serious crime.
Pretoria Central Station
Contact crimes saw a decrease of 5.4%. Murder and sexual offences both increased by three counts, from 4 cases to 7 and from 24 cases to 27 respectively.
Assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) decreased by 8 counts from 15 cases to 7 and robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 2.6% from 153 cases to 157.
Common assault decreased by 7.9% (139 cases to 128) and common robbery cases decreased by 8.7% (161 cases to 147).
No attempted sexual or contact sexual offences were reported this and the previous quarters, while rape cases increased by 7 counts (17 counts to 24). Sexual assault cases decreased by 4 counts from 7 cases to 3.
Car hijackings increased by 8 counts (9 cases to 17) and robbery at residential premises increased by 2 counts (0 cases to 2).
Robberies at non-residential premises decreased by 15 counts from 22 to 7 and no bank robbery, truck hijacking or CIT robbery took place this or the previous quarter.
No arson was reported while one was reported last quarter, and malicious damage to property cases decreased by 28.1% (89 cases to 64), giving contact-related crimes a decrease of 28.9%.
Property-related crimes saw the most significant increase at 25.7% in total. Burglary at non-residential premises increased by 56.4% from 39 cases to 61 and theft out of or from a motor vehicle cases increased by 33.0% (224 cases up to 298). Theft of motor vehicle or motorcycle cases decreased by 14 counts from 58 cases to 44. No stock theft case hase been reported in the past five quarters.
Commercial crimes increased by 2.6% (154 cases to 158) as did shoplifting cases by 34.1% (126 up to 169 cases) and all other theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased by 2.2% (323 cases down to 316).
Serious crimes reported by the community increased by 4%, from 1 638 up to 1 704 cases.
Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 10.5% from 181 cases to 200. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs cases detected saw an increase of 54.5% (33 cases up to 51 cases detected) and 8 cases of illegal possession of a firearm or ammunition were reported in this and the previous quarter.
Detected drug-related crimes increased by 1 count from 140 to 141 cases and no sexual offences have been detected as a result of police action in the past 3 quarters. Kidnapping cases increased by 4 counts from 9 cases to 13.
Sunnyside Police Station
Contact crimes saw a collective decrease of 2.4% from 507 down to 495 cases.
Sexual offences decreased by 10 counts from 24 cases to 14, while assault with intent to cause GBH decreased by 4 counts (36 cases down to 32).
Murder cases increased by 2 counts (4 cases to 2), while attempted murder cases decreased by 1 count (4 cases to 3) and common assault cases decreased by 4.5% (157 cases to 150). Common robbery cases decreased by 26.6% (124 cases down to 31) and robberies with aggravating circumstances increased by 25.6% (160 up to 201 cases).
Rape cases decreased by 7 counts (18 cases to 11) and sexual assault cases (6 cases down to 3).
No attempted sexual or contact sexual offence has been reported in the past three quarters.
Car hijackings saw a significant increase of 16 counts from 17 cases in the previous third quarter, now to 33. Robbery at residential premises increased by 2 counts (12 cases to 14) and robberies at non-residential premises increased by a single count (9 cases to 10). No CIT robbery, truck hijacking or bank robbery has been reported in the past two quarters.
Malicious damage to property cases increased by one case, from 67 to 68, while no arson case has been reported to Sunnyside Police Station in the past five quarters.
Unlike Central, Sunnyside police saw a decrease of 21.2% in property-related crimes. Theft of motor vehicle or motorcycle cases decreased by 34.4% (96 cases down to 63) and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases decreased by 23.3% (263 to 202 cases). No stock theft case has been reported in the past five quarters.
Burglaries at residential premises decreased by 3 counts (48 cases to 45) though burglaries at non-residential premises increased by 8 counts (13 to 21)
Shoplifting decreased by 21 counts (58 down to 37) and all theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased by 6.5% (307 down to 287). Commercial crimes saw an increase of 9.8% (132 cases up to 145) while community-reported crimes saw a decrease of 5.6% (497 cases to 469) and kidnapping counts increased by 5 counts (16 up to 21).
Sunnyside police officers have been keeping their eyes open as crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 30.8% from 201 cases up to 263.
Drug-related crimes detected increased by 41.3% (109 cases up to 154) and detected driving under the influence of alcohol or drug cases increased by 36.85 (68 to 93 cases). Detected sexual offences decreased by 10 counts, from 23 cases detected last quarter to 13 and illegal possession of a firearm or ammunition cases increased by 2 counts (1 case up to 3).
