JACKSON, MI – Lume Cannabis Co. won’t be shut out of plans to build a marijuana shop in Jackson, due to a nearby virtual school, the Jackson City Council decided.
Plans were put on hold when city officials learned in January that the 1512 N. West Ave. location in Jackson Crossing would be within 1,000 feet of South Central Michigan Virtual, the site of a virtual school where students can go for classes or for tutoring.
Virtual schools don’t apply to the 1,000-foot rule, Councilman Jeromy Alexander said, as city staff determined they don’t fall under the definition of “school” in the city’s ordinance. But the council might later consider setting up a buffer zone for such schools from marijuana businesses, he said.
Lume will invest $1 million to $1.5 million into the property, which is currently Mr. Tunes Custom Audio and Video.
Lume is one of the first in Michigan to offer home delivery of recreational marijuana products, according to Michigan Radio. It’s only available in select communities so far, and Jackson isn’t among them.
Two medical marijuana retailers now have initial approval from the city, the other being New Generation Meds LLC for a shop at 118 N. Columbus St. Both businesses still need further city approval. The next review phase won’t begin until April 24, per city documents.
The city will grant up to three medical marijuana retailer licenses, per its ordinance. Recreational marijuana business licenses will be considered at a later time, Mayor Derek Dobies said.
A grading scale helped the city determine which businesses to award licenses to – and Lume scored very high on the scale, Dobies said.
Lume is committed to installing a 360-degree high-definition exterior surveillance camera and an interior camera, and will give 24-hour access to Jackson police. It will also have solar-powered charging stations for vehicles, create 18 full-time local jobs and have a starting wage at twice the minimum wage – all of which helped Lume score higher on the scale.
